    Understanding What Internet Bandwidth Is

Internet bandwidth refers to the amount of data that is transferred in a network at any given instant. The more your bandwidth is, the faster your internet is going to perform.

However, it is imperative that you understand how bandwidth works and what are the metrics for measuring it. Today, I’ll tell you everything that you need to know about bandwidth and how you can have your ISP increase it so that you have a faster internet connection!

    Bandwidth vs. Speed

Usually, people get confused between bandwidth and speed, since both of them are like two peas in a pod. While bandwidth and speed are two different elements, they are aspects of one common network. Both of them have an impact on how your internet performs.

Bandwidth is the capacity measure of data that can be transferred between the Internet Service Provider (ISP) and your home’s network in a second. For instance, if you have a 100 Mbps bandwidth, then your connection can only handle a transfer of 100 Megabits in a second and not more than that.

However, speed refers to the rate at which data travels from one point to another. There are certain factors that contribute to the speed of data transmission. For instance, the latest WiFi protocol can cater to more internet speed than that of an outdated one. If your internet has less bandwidth and more users, then your internet will be slower.

If speed is what you are looking for in your internet connection, I would suggest going for  Spectrum Internet. I’ve been using it as well and my speeds go up to 1 Gbps! You can learn more about Spectrum’s internet plans by contacting the Spectrum Customer Service.

However, you also need to keep in mind that your internet equipment needs to be up to date to obtain the promised internet speed.

If you use a router with an outdated network adapter, then the router will not be able to handle high internet speeds. For instance, a router with an 802.11b adapter cannot handle more than 11 Mbps of internet speed.

    Bandwidth vs. Latency

Latency is another term that you should be aware of, so you would have a better understanding of how your internet works. Both bandwidth and latency revolve around the idea of the exchange of data.

While bandwidth is the measure of the capacity of data, it also includes the amount of data that is sent from your home network. However, latency differs here as it is the opposite of that concept. Latency is the measure of data that is received by your home network.

A common example of latency is the lag that you face while you are watching your favorite TV show or playing an online game with your friends. Latency is also referred to as the ping rate. A high ping rate means that your internet will lag, because of the delay of information received by your network.

How Much Bandwidth Do You Typically Require?

The bandwidth that you require in your house depends on how many people live with you and how much internet they typically use. If you have more people living in your house, you will naturally need more bandwidth in the first place.

Similarly, not only does your bandwidth depend on the number of people living in your house but it also depends on the number of devices that you have in your house that are connected to the internet.

For instance, if you have a gaming console that is connected to the internet and a smart TV that is also connected to the internet, then both of them will unnecessarily take up your bandwidth.

One way to ensure that you retain your bandwidth is by disconnecting all unnecessary devices from your internet connection. Even though your devices may be on standby, they still take up resources such as power if they are plugged in and your bandwidth if they are connected to your internet.

How Can You Increase Your Bandwidth?

Honestly, there’s just one straight answer to this. You can only increase your bandwidth if you upgrade your internet connection. It is wise that you put in a lot of research before you get an upgrade for yourself.

Look into advertisements by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to see which one suits your internet needs the most. To make things easier for yourself, you can search for broadband labels given by ISPs for better information on each internet plan that they offer. This way, you can pick out the internet plan that works best for you and everyone living in your house.

Furthermore, there are some other things that you can do to improve your internet speed. Make sure to do the following to improve your internet connection:

    Purchase a Better Router

To make the best out of your internet service, make sure you have a router that is up to date with the latest technology. Having the latest network adapter in your router will ensure greater internet speeds due to faster transmission of data between the router and your devices.

Opt for a Wired Connection Instead

Going wireless is good, but opting for a wired connection is even better. There’s no loss of data in this kind of internet connection, and you get a relatively faster speed. All you need is an Ethernet cable to connect your devices to your router.

Despite having a similar concept, your internet bandwidth is different from your internet speed. It is the capacity of your internet connection to transfer data in a second. The internet speed is the rate at which data travels. To make your internet work faster, disconnect all unnecessary devices from the internet and get better gear for your internet!
